Most failed landscaping in North Alabama follows the same pattern: a homeowner buys healthy plants, digs a hole, waters faithfully — and the plant is dead by August. The plant was rarely the problem. The hole was.

Huntsville and Madison sit on dense red clay. Dig a neat hole in it, drop in a plant with loose potting soil around the roots, and you have built a clay bowl — water runs into the loose soil, hits the compacted clay walls, and sits there. Roots drown in spring, then bake in the same hardened bowl during an August dry spell. The plant did not need more water or less water. It needed a bed designed for clay.

That is the core of how we design: beds graded so water moves through them, soil amended across the whole bed rather than one hole at a time, and plants chosen because they handle zone 7b's combination of humid summers and wet winters — not because they looked good on a shelf in April.

Designed as one yard, not a collection of projects

The other common failure is a yard assembled piecemeal — a bed added one year, a tree another, sod patched in later — with nothing relating to anything else. We lay out beds, borders, plantings, and turf as a single plan, even if you install it in phases. That is the difference between a yard that looks intentional and one that looks accumulated.
