What's Included

We design garden beds the way they have to work in zone 7b — plants matched to your sun and soil first, then layered for bloom across all four seasons, then finished with the decorative details that separate a garden from a row of shrubs.

  • Garden bed layout designed for year-round color and easy upkeep
  • Plant selection suited to Huntsville's heat, humidity, and clay soil — shrubs, perennials, and seasonal color
  • Soil amendment so plants establish in North Alabama clay instead of fighting it
  • Decorative finishing touches — stone, bed edging, planters, and accent features
  • Mulch or pine straw installation to suppress weeds and tie the beds together
  • Honest guidance on what will actually thrive in your specific sun and drainage conditions

The April Garden Problem

Most Huntsville gardens are designed in a single weekend in April, when every garden center in town is full of blooming plants. The result is a bed that looks spectacular for six weeks — and then spends the other ten and a half months as a row of green shapes.

A designed garden works on a 12-month calendar. In zone 7b that is genuinely achievable: camellias bloom in the dead of winter, azaleas and dogwoods own the spring, hydrangeas and crape myrtles carry the summer, and sasanquas and fall perennials close out the year — with evergreen structure plants holding the bed together in between. None of that happens by shopping whatever is blooming today.

Honest about what thrives here

The other half of garden design in North Alabama is knowing what to say no to. Plenty of plants sold locally struggle in our clay soil and humidity, and a garden full of plants that need constant rescue is not a garden you will enjoy. We would rather tell you a plant is wrong for your yard than sell it to you twice.

The finishing layer matters too. Defined edging, decorative stone, a few well-placed planters, and fresh mulch or pine straw are what make a bed read as intentional. We handle larger stone accents — borders, steps, and dry creek beds — as part of the same project when the design calls for them.

Start Fresh or Work With What You Have

Not every garden project is a blank slate, and forcing one is usually a waste of good plants and good money. Most beds we see in Huntsville and Madison fall into one of three situations:

Good bones, tired plantings

The bed shape and anchor shrubs are fine — the color is just gone. We keep the structure, swap struggling plants for performers, refresh the edging and mulch, and the bed reads brand new at a fraction of a rebuild's cost.

Overgrown and over capacity

Foundation shrubs planted twenty years ago are now swallowing windows. Here the design work is mostly subtraction — removing or hard-pruning the overgrowth, then rebuilding the bed at a scale that fits the house. Pairs naturally with our yard cleanup service.

Nothing there yet

New construction or a yard that has only ever been turf. This is the blank slate — we design beds from scratch, amend the clay properly before anything goes in, and build the garden in phases if that fits the budget better.

Garden Design FAQs

Common questions about garden design and decorating in Huntsville and Madison, Alabama.

What flowers and shrubs grow best in Huntsville, AL?
For shrubs, the reliable performers in zone 7b are azaleas, hydrangeas, camellias, loropetalum, hollies, and gardenias. For long-season color, knockout roses, lantana, salvia, and coneflowers handle the summer heat, while pansies and violas carry beds through winter. The honest answer depends on your specific yard — a bed in full afternoon sun needs a completely different plant list than one under mature oaks. That site-specific match is most of what good garden design is.
How do you get year-round color in a North Alabama garden?
By layering bloom times instead of buying everything in April. A well-designed zone 7b bed might pair camellias (winter bloom) with azaleas (spring), hydrangeas and crape myrtle (summer), and sasanquas or fall-blooming perennials (autumn), with evergreen structure plants holding the bed together in between. We design beds as a 12-month calendar, not a single spring photo.
What's the difference between garden design and landscape design?
Garden design focuses on the planted beds themselves — plant selection, color, seasonal interest, and the decorative touches that finish them. Landscape design is the whole-yard plan: how beds, borders, turf, and plantings fit together across the property. If you want one or two beautiful beds, this service is the right fit. If you are rethinking the whole yard, start with our landscape design and installation service.
Can you work with my existing garden beds?
Yes. Many projects start with beds that have good bones but tired plantings — we keep what is healthy and well-placed, replace what is struggling, and add edging, stone, or planters to finish the look. You do not have to start from scratch to get a noticeably better garden.
What decorative features do you install?
Decorative stone and gravel accents, steel or stone bed edging, planters and container arrangements, accent boulders, and mulch or pine straw finishes. We also handle larger stone features like dry creek beds, borders, and steps — just ask when you call.
Will my garden be hard to maintain?
Not if it is designed honestly. Low-maintenance is a design decision: choosing shrubs that hold their shape instead of fast growers that need constant shearing, perennials over high-turnover annuals, and mulched beds with defined edges that keep weeds manageable. Tell us how much time you want to spend, and we design to that number — and if the answer is zero, our landscape maintenance service can handle the upkeep.
